October 2009 Greetings, As we begin another school year isn’t it wonderful to know that you are sending your child to one of the best school districts in the state? In fact, the school district Board of Directors recently established a new strategic plan containing goals that called for Dieringer schools to rank among the top 5% of districts statewide. The good news is that in several areas our schools have already hit that target. The district has also done a great job of using the resources provided by the state and through local levies, but reduced funding at the state level has required the district to make some tough choices. For the first time, beginning this year, parents of our students have been required to pay “participation fees” for athletics and the activity bus, which over the years has provided equal access to after school events, will be reduced to two days per week. Other reductions could be in store for the current generation of Dieringer kids. When a group of Dieringer alumni got together last summer at the old middle school, an idea was hatched to provide a way for current and former students and their families to support the district. It helped knowing that other districts including the Sumner School District had already been extremely successful supporting their schools though educational foundations. So armed with a mission to provide resources to the district to ensure that its students will continue to have the best educational K-8 opportunity possible, the Dieringer Education Foundation was formed. The funds that this Foundation generates could be used for special programs such as enrichment and intervention as well as for funding student scholarships on the basis of academic achievement or service to the Dieringer community. We hope that as a Dieringer parent or community member that you will be interested in supporting the work of the Foundation by sending a tax deductable donation to the address shown on the enclosed business card. Donors of $100 or more will have their names engraved on a plaque mounted on the donor wall at North Tapps Middle School. To make your tax deductable donation… Thanks for your support and feel free to learn more about the Dieringer Education Foundation by viewing our website at www.dieringerfoundation.org Sincerely yours, Pat Keaton Principal, North Tapps Middle School
October 2009 Greetings, Do you remember any of the following: --An ivy covered smokestack with a principal lurking nearby to catch you doing the unthinkable- running between the buildings? --The "C" club, the Ski Club, night, cheerleaders, arm wrestling, boxing and the swimming pool? --Shamrock points or Bulldog points? --The gym being closed down due to earthquake danger, but ceiling tiles falling to the ground in the main building? --Going outside to play softball on a warm spring day? --Elementary school staff members like: Mrs. Goodchild, Mrs. Berge, Mrs. Buckley, Mr. and Mrs. Fenton, Mr. Steiner or Mr. Denton? --Middle school staff members like: Mr. Larson, Mr. Rioux, Mrs. Muir, Mr. and Mrs. Clark, Mr. and Mrs. Lakin, Mrs. Clifford, Mr. and Mrs. Hellwich or Mr. Rooney? If you do, then I’ll bet you have a soft spot in your heart for what must have been a very important time in your life - your Dieringer years. Just as in the past, our "little" district continues to offer an incredible K-8 education along with abundant activities and sports. And while districts around us are experiencing declining enrollment, at Dieringer we are growing at a slow and steady pace. Just as your parents believed, families continue to view Dieringer as an attractive option for their school aged children. The district has done a great job of using the resources provided by the state and through local levies, but reduced funding at the state level has required the district to make some tough choices. “The high cost of licensing computers makes it difficult to give students the type of access to technology that I would like to provide. I would love to see Foundation resources used to support my efforts to bring technology to our students by making a laptop computer available for every student in my class.”
Bob Rooney, Eighth Grade U.S. History/Washington State History
Quotes:
“Our computer lab is frequently used to support our reading curriculum testing program and thus less available for other technology projects. We would like to see Foundation money be used to purchase a portable computer lab for our building so that all teachers are better able to support the technology requirements for each grade level.”
